This is the latest “Generation 3” AMG Performance steering wheel, recognizable by its distinctive Twin-Spoke (Double-Tier) design. This wheel represents a major shift in Mercedes-AMG interior logic, moving away from physical buttons to Capacitive Touch surfaces.

• Capacitive Touch Sensors: The spokes feature seamless touch-sensitive panels. Unlike previous generations, these sensors also detect “Hands-On” for Level 2 Autonomy (Drive Pilot) without requiring steering input.

• AMG Drive Unit (U88): Two integrated OLED “satellite” displays. The right dial handles Drive Modes, while the left displays are customizable for exhaust, suspension, and ESP.

   

• Carbon Fiber Options: Available in High-Gloss Carbon or Matte Carbon (typically found in G63 and SL63).

• Grip Materials: Usually wrapped in DINAMICA (for grip) or Perforated Nappa Leather (for luxury/comfort).

3. Technical Specifications

• Heated Steering Wheel (Code 443): Note that Carbon Fiber wheels often do not support heating in the carbon sections. Heating is typically only available in the 9-and-3 leather grip areas if equipped.

• Paddle Shifters: Large-format galvanized aluminum or optional carbon fiber shift paddles.

• Airbag: Requires the latest compact, round AMG airbag with decorative stitching and the Mercedes star in a recessed high-gloss ring.

4. Retrofit & Installation Warnings

⚠️ Compatibility Logic:

1. Cross-Generation Swaps: While this wheel physically fits the steering column of an older W205 C-Class or W213 (pre-facelift), it is not plug-and-play. You will need a conversion module to translate the capacitive signals to the older car’s LIN-bus system.

2. Vibration Feedback: This wheel houses the haptic motor for Lane Keep Assist. If your car lacks this feature, the motor will simply remain inactive.

3. The Airbag: You cannot reuse an airbag from the previous generation (W205/W213/W222). You must source the specific W223/R232 generation airbag.

5. Maintenance Pro-Tip

The high-gloss carbon on the R232 and W223 wheels is prone to micro-scratches from rings or jewelry.

• Protection: Many owners apply a PPF (Paint Protection Film) or a ceramic coating specifically to the carbon fiber segments to prevent swirl marks.

• Cleaning: Use only a damp microfibre for the carbon. Avoid alcohol-based cleaners on the capacitive touch panels, as they can degrade the anti-fingerprint coating over time.
