Genuine M5/M6 (F85/F86) clusters are not fully digital (6WB) from the factory; they use the 6WA (Extended Display) with physical dials and a 330 KM/H scale.
The “M” Retrofit: If you put a 6WB digital cluster into an X5M, you will lose the M-specific “Shift Lights” and the “M-View” HUD graphics unless you use custom aftermarket coding/firmware to mimic the M-design.
Oil Temp vs. MPG: Standard F15 6WB units show a “Fuel Economy” (MPG/Liters) gauge. True F85/F86 M clusters display Oil Temperature in that location—vital for S63 V8 engine health.
Retrofit & Coding (The “Virginizing” Process)
To install a used 6WB/Speedometer into your car, the unit must be virginized:
