PORSCHE ALCANTARA STEERING WHEEL 991 982 MACAN CAYENNE
For the 991, 982 (718), Macan, and Cayenne, the Alcantara (or Race-Tex) steering wheel is the primary touchpoint for Porsche’s GT-inspired interiors. In 2026, the market for these wheels is divided between “Sport Design” factory replacements and the popular “992-style” retrofit.
1. Compatibility Across Platforms
Porsche utilizes a standardized mounting spline for most models from 2010–2024, making steering wheels highly interchangeable across different vehicle lines:
-
The “991.2 Style” Wheel: This is the current “universal” upgrade. It features the hollow spokes and the circular driving mode dial. It fits the 991 (all), 981/982 (Boxster/Cayman), Macan (95B), and Cayenne (958.2).
-
The Retrofit Rule: If you are upgrading a 991.1 or 958.1 (pre-2016) to the newer Alcantara wheel, you must also purchase a new 991.2-style airbag. The older triangular airbags from Gen 1 models will not fit the newer Sport Design wheel frame.
2. Alcantara vs. Race-Tex (2026 Update)
Starting with the 992 and Macan III, Porsche transitioned from the brand-name “Alcantara” to their in-house Race-Tex material.
-
Feel: Race-Tex has a slightly higher grip coefficient and a more “suede-like” nap.
-
Maintenance: Both materials are high-maintenance. Without gloves, the oils from your hands will cause the fibers to “mat down” and become shiny/greasy over time.
-
Cleaning: For 2026, the standard recommendation is to avoid heavy chemicals. Use a damp (not wet) microfiber cloth and a soft-bristled Alcantara brush to lift the pile back up every 2,000 miles.
3. Estimated Pricing (New & Used)
Prices for Alcantara wheels remain high in 2026 due to the popularity of the “GTS” look.
| Item | Condition | Estimated Price (USD) |
| OEM GT Sport Alcantara Wheel | New (No Airbag) | $1,900 – $2,300 |
| Full Retrofit Kit (Wheel + Airbag) | New OEM | $3,200 – $3,800 |
| Used Alcantara Wheel (991.2) | Grade B (Matted) | $850 – $1,100 |
| Used Alcantara Wheel (991.2) | Grade A (Fresh) | $1,200 – $1,500 |
4. Part Number Reference
-
991-044-400-32: Standard Alcantara Sport Steering Wheel (no heating).
-
991-347-803-82-RAG: GT3-specific small-diameter Alcantara wheel.
-
9P1-419-091: Common base part number for the 718/982 Race-Tex wheel.
5. Essential Retrofit Note: Multi-Function & Heating
If you are moving from a standard leather wheel to an Alcantara Sport wheel, you may lose certain features:
-
Heating: Many Alcantara/Race-Tex wheels are not heated because the heating element can damage the adhesive in the Alcantara fabric. Check your part number carefully if you live in a cold climate.
-
GPS Adapter: If installing a Macan II/991.2 wheel into a Macan I/991.1, you may need a GPS STMV1 adapter to make the multi-function buttons and scroll wheels talk to the older car’s computer.
