Mercedes C CLS E S CLK SL ML 63AMG OM156 M156 Gearbox
the gearbox paired with the M156 6.2L V8 engine is just as famous (and potentially problematic) as the engine itself. Across the C, CLS, E, S, CLK, SL, and ML 63 AMG models, Mercedes used two distinct versions of the 722.9 7-Speed transmission.
Knowing which one you have is critical for parts, performance, and maintenance.
1. The Two Main Variants
While both are 7-speed transmissions, the way they connect to the engine is completely different:
A. 7G-Tronic (Torque Converter)
-
Models: Early E63 (W211), CLS63 (W219), S63 (W221), ML63 (W164), and CLK63 (A/C209).
-
Characteristics: Uses a traditional fluid torque converter. It provides smoother gear changes but is slightly slower and “softer” during aggressive driving.
-
Reliability: Generally robust, but the torque converter itself can wear out, leading to vibration or “shuddering” under load.
B. AMG Speedshift MCT (Multi-Clutch Technology)
-
Models: 2012+ C63 (W204 LCI), 2010+ E63 (W212), 2012+ CLS63 (W218), and SL63 (R230 Facelift).
-
Characteristics: Replaces the torque converter with a wet start-off clutch. This allows for lightning-fast shifts, “Race Start” (launch control), and a much more mechanical feel.
-
Reliability: Better for track use but can feel “jerky” in stop-and-go traffic as the clutch packs age.
2. 2026 Market Pricing (Estimated USD)
Replacing an AMG gearbox is a major event. By 2026, many of these units are being sourced from specialized salvage yards.
3. Common 2026 Failure Points
Regardless of whether you have the MCT or the standard 7G-Tronic, they share common electronics:
-
Conductor Plate (VGS) Failure: The internal sensors (speed sensors) on the conductor plate fail. This causes the car to go into “Limp Mode” (stuck in 2nd gear).
-
2026 Tip: You can now have these sensors repaired by specialists for about $400, rather than buying a whole new plate from Mercedes.
-
-
Valve Body Clogging: Fine metal shavings from normal wear can clog the solenoids. This leads to harsh shifting (especially the 2-1 downshift).
-
The “VGS1 to VGS3” Upgrade: If you have an early M156 car (2007-2008), it likely has a VGS1 plate which cannot be easily programmed. Most owners in 2026 upgrade to the VGS3 hardware for better reliability and faster shifting.
