Windshield for C4 Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1
replacement windshield for a 1889–1995 C4 Corvette ZR-1 is one of the more unique challenges in the Corvette hobby. Unlike the standard C4, the ZR-1 featured a specialized windshield with technology that was decades ahead of its time—and is now notoriously difficult to source.
The “Solar Control” Difference
The ZR-1 windshield was manufactured specifically by Libbey-Owens-Ford (LOF) and contained a microscopic layer of gold/metal oxide between the glass laminates.
-
UV Protection: This “Solar Ray” film reflected IR and UV rays to keep the cabin cool and protect the specialized leather interior.
-
The “Radar Cutout”: Because the metal film blocked signals, the ZR-1 windshield features a distinct rectangular clear patch at the bottom center (near the dash). This was designed to allow garage door openers and radar detectors to function.
-
The Visual Tint: An original ZR-1 windshield has a subtle pinkish/bronze or “oil-slick” hue when viewed at certain angles in the sun, which is a hallmark of the model.
The “Delamination” Issue
The most common problem with original ZR-1 glass is delamination (often called “milking”). Over time, moisture penetrates the edges of the glass, causing the gold film to oxidize and turn white/cloudy. This usually starts at the bottom corners and works its way inward. Once this happens, the glass cannot be repaired—only replaced.
Sourcing & Availability (2026 Status)
As of 2026, finding a “New Old Stock” (NOS) ZR-1 windshield is nearly impossible, and when they do surface, they can command prices between $3,500 and $5,000.
| Option | Description | Estimated Cost |
| NOS (Original LOF) | Authentic factory glass with the gold film and radar cutout. | $3,500+ |
| Standard C4 Glass | A standard 1990–1996 windshield will fit the frame perfectly but lacks the gold tint and radar cutout. | $300 – $500 |
| Reproduction Sets | Small batches are occasionally made by specialists (like the ZR-1 Net Registry group buys). | $1,500 – $2,500 |
Important Fitment Note
While the Standard C4 windshield fits the ZR-1 frame perfectly, using one will significantly hurt the car’s resale value if it is a low-mileage collector example. However, for a “driver” car, standard glass is the most practical solution since modern window tints can mimic the heat-rejection properties of the original solar film.
