Dodge Charger with center section

Dodge Charger, the term “center section” typically refers to one of three distinct areas, depending on whether you are working on the drivetrain, the interior, or the exterior styling.

1. Drivetrain: The Rear Differential “Third Member”

In performance and classic automotive circles, the “center section” refers to the differential carrier assembly (also known as a drop-out third member).

  • Classic Chargers (1966–1974): These often use the Mopar 8.75-inch rear end. The “center section” is the removable housing that contains the ring and pinion gears and the differential unit (LSD or Open).

    • Common Castings: You will see “741,” “742,” or “489” cases. The 489 case is the most sought-after for high-horsepower builds.

  • Modern Chargers (2006–Present): These use an independent rear suspension (IRS). The center section here is the differential housing itself. Upgrading this to a Limited Slip Differential (LSD) from a Scat Pack or Hellcat is a common modification for 5.7L R/T owners.

2. Interior: The Center Console

For interior restoration or customization, the center section refers to the floor console assembly between the driver and passenger seats.

  • Components: This includes the shifter bezel, cup holders, storage bin, and the armrest lid.

  • Modern Variants: There are significant differences between the Police Pursuit center section (which is often a “mini console” to allow for equipment mounting) and the Full Floor Console found in civilian SXT, R/T, and SRT models.

3. Exterior: The Grille or Bumper Section

In body repair or styling, the center section is the central plastic insert of the front or rear bumper.

  • Front: The “Crossbar” grille was the iconic center section for the 2011–2014 models. For 2015+, the center section refers to the large honeycomb mesh area between the headlights.

  • Rear: This usually refers to the Rear Diffuser or the valance area between the exhaust tips.
