DODGE RAM 5 HEADLIGHTS FULL LED HEADLIGHTS
Dodge RAM (DT Platform, 2019–2024) features three distinct headlight tiers. When sourcing or listing “Full LED” units, it is critical to distinguish between the Reflector LED and the Projector LED systems, as they are not “plug-and-play” with one another without a conversion harness.
1. The Two Types of “Full LED” Units
A. Premium Bi-Function LED Projector (Top Tier)
Found on Limited, Longhorn, and TRX trims. This is the most advanced unit available.
-
Design: Features a distinct “Twin-Lens” projector setup.
-
AFS (Adaptive Front-lighting System): The projectors physically swivel up to 15° to follow the direction of the steering wheel.
-
Signature Lighting: Dual “C-shaped” LED Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) that also act as sequential turn signals.
-
Bezel Finish: Chrome (Longhorn), Black (TRX/Night Edition), or Dark Chrome (Limited).
B. LED Reflector (Mid Tier)
Standard on Laramie and optional on Big Horn/Lone Star trims.
-
Design: Uses multiple segmented LED reflectors rather than a projector lens.
-
Functionality: Fixed beam (does not swivel). Includes LED high/low beams and an LED DRL strip.
-
Appearance: Typically features a cleaner, more “open” housing compared to the complex Projector version.
2. Technical Specifications & Identification
| Feature | Projector LED (Premium) | Reflector LED (Standard) |
| Connector | 22-Pin High-Density | 16-Pin or 22-Pin (Varies) |
| Main Beam | Bi-Function Projector | Multi-Segment Reflector |
| Turn Signal | Sequential LED | Standard LED Flash |
| Auto-Leveling | Included (Internal Motor) | Usually Not Included |
3. Critical Inspection Points for Inventory
If you are sourcing these for resale, check these “high-failure” areas:
-
Lower Mounting Bracket: The bottom plastic mounting tab is the most frequently broken part during shipping or minor bumper impacts.
-
Internal “Halo” Flicker: Power up the DRLs to ensure the “C-ring” is consistent. If one segment is dimmer than the others, the internal LED board is failing.
-
Lens Delamination: Check the top edge of the lens (where it meets the hood) for “peeling” or UV degradation, which is common in high-heat climates.
-
Rear Vent Caps: Ensure the rubber “breather” caps are intact. If missing, the headlight will suffer from permanent internal condensation/fogging.
4. Retrofit & Compatibility Note
-
Halogen to LED Swap: If a customer is upgrading from base Halogen (Tradesman/Big Horn) to these LED units, they must use a conversion harness (such as those from Morimoto or Mopar-specific vendors).
-
Software Flash: After physical installation, the truck’s Body Control Module (BCM) must be flashed (using AlfaOBD or a dealer tool) to recognize the LED “Voltage Sense,” otherwise the lights will flicker or trigger a “Bulb Out” error on the dashboard.
