DODGE RAM 5 SUSPENSION ROUGH COUNTRY VERTEX 8 STAGE
Rough Country Vertex 2.5 Series is a high-performance, reservoir-based suspension system designed for the Dodge RAM 1500 (DT Platform, 2019–2024). It is specifically engineered to bridge the gap between standard lift kits and high-end race shocks like Fox or King.
The “8 Stage” refers to the 8-position adjustable damping dial, allowing the driver to manually tune the ride quality for everything from highway cruising to high-speed off-road recovery.

System Components
A full Vertex kit for the RAM 1500 typically includes:
-
Front Bolt-On Coilovers: Designed to provide up to 3.5 inches of lift. They come pre-loaded with high-tensile springs for a “bolt-on” installation that does not require a spring compressor.
-
Rear Reservoir Shocks: Monotube shocks with external reservoirs that mount to the frame, providing increased travel and cooling for the rear multi-link coil suspension.
-
Steel Braided Reservoir Lines: High-pressure hoses that connect the shock body to the nitrogen-charged reservoir.
The 8-Stage Damping System
The primary selling point of the Vertex system is the external dial, which adjusts the compression valving:
-
Settings 1–3 (Soft): Ideal for daily commuting or “empty bed” driving to eliminate the “truck-like” bounce over expansion joints.
-
Settings 4–6 (Medium): The “All-Around” setting for light trails and improved cornering stability.
-
Settings 7–8 (Firm): Maximum damping for heavy towing, hauling, or high-speed washboard roads where preventing “bottoming out” is the priority.
Critical Installation & Inventory Notes
-
Upper Control Arms (UCAs): If installing the Vertex coilovers at the full 3.5-inch lift height, aftermarket UCAs are mandatory. The factory stamped-steel arms will hit the coil spring and the ball joint angle will be too aggressive, leading to premature failure.
-
Air Suspension Compatibility: The Vertex system is designed for trucks with Standard Coil Suspension. It is not a direct replacement for RAMs equipped with the factory Active-Level™ Four-Corner Air Suspension without an extensive “Air-to-Coil” conversion kit and software bypass.
-
Nitrogen Charge: These shocks are nitrogen-charged. During inspection, ensure there is no oily film around the reservoir hose fittings, as this indicates a seal leak that will require a professional rebuild.
-
Tire Clearance: This suspension typically allows for 35×12.50 tires on 20-inch wheels with minor trimming, or 33-inch tires with zero modifications.
Professional Sourcing Tip
When listing or sourcing these used, check the Spherical Bearings (the eyelets where the bolts pass through). Unlike rubber bushings, these metal bearings provide better articulation but can develop “clunking” sounds if the PTFE line
