Toyota Supra MK4 – 2JZ-GTE – JZ-A80 – Glass headlights OEM

Toyota Supra A80 (1993–2002) was equipped with two different headlight constructions depending on the market and production year. For many collectors and restorers, the Glass OEM Headlights are the “holy grail” because they do not yellow, fog, or oxidize like the plastic (Lexan) units found on US-spec and later JDM models.

1. Market Availability & Identification

The glass-lens units were primarily manufactured for the European (EUDM) and early Japanese (JDM) markets.

  • JDM (Series 1): From 1993 to 1996, many Japanese Supras came with glass lenses.

  • EUDM: Almost all European-spec Supras (which were 2JZ-GTE only) featured glass headlights to meet local durability and light-scattering regulations.

  • USDM: All US-spec Supras (1993–1998) were equipped with plastic lenses, which are notorious for turning yellow/opaque over time.

2. Physical Characteristics

Feature Glass (JDM/EUDM) Plastic (USDM/Series 2 JDM)
Durability Permanent clarity; scratch resistant. Prone to UV yellowing and oxidation.
Internal Finish Usually a bright chrome/silver housing. Often available in “Gunmetal” (1997+ models).
Weight Significantly heavier. Lightweight.
Light Pattern Cut-off line is sharp; EUDM has “city light” bulbs. US-spec has specific DOT beam patterns.

3. Official Part Numbers (Series 1 Glass)

If you are sourcing these for a 2JZ-GTE restoration or inventory, use these specific Toyota numbers:

  • Right (RH): 81111-1B240

  • Left (LH): 81151-1B240

4. Technical Installation Notes

  • Direct Fit: These are physically interchangeable with the plastic USDM headlights. The mounting points and bolt holes are identical.

  • The “City Light” (EUDM): European glass units often include an extra small bulb (parking light) inside the high-beam housing. If installing these on a US car, you can either leave them unwired or tap them into your corner markers.

  • Beam Pattern Warning: If you install JDM glass headlights on a car driven in the US or Europe, the beam pattern will “kick up” to the left (blinding oncoming traffic) because Japan drives on the left side of the road. EUDM glass units are the preferred choice for US/Europe driving.

5. Market Value (2026)

Since Toyota discontinued production of the glass units several years ago, they have become high-value investment pieces:

  • New Old Stock (NOS): Can fetch $2,500 – $4,000 USD per pair if in original boxes.

  • Clean Used: Typically sell for $1,500 – $2,200 USD depending on the condition of the internal silvering (which can occasionally flake).

Pro-Tip for Restoration

If the glass is perfect but the internal chrome is peeling, these units can be “baked” open. However, because the lenses are glass, they require more heat to soften the butyl sealant than plastic units do. Extreme care is needed to avoid thermal shock, which could crack the lens.
