1. The “Heavy” Clutch (Stock)

The original 4.3L single-plate organic clutch is notoriously heavy and is often described as having a “short” life (typically 25,000 to 45,000 miles depending on usage).

  • Upgrade Path: Most owners now replace the stock unit with the Vantage 4.7L twin-plate clutch or aftermarket options from VelocityAP or Bamford Rose. These provide a much lighter pedal feel and significantly longer life.

2. High Reverse Gear

The reverse gear on the 6-speed manual is geared quite “tall” (almost equivalent to 2nd gear).

  • Risk: Reversing up a steep incline can easily burn the clutch friction material. Always try to reverse on flat ground or minimize slipping the clutch when backing up.

3. Gearbox Oil Service

  • Fluid Type: Originally specified as Bot 402, now commonly serviced with Castrol Syntrans 75W-80 or Shell Spirax S6.

  • Interval: Specialists recommend changing the transaxle oil every 4 years or 40,000 miles.

  • Shifting Feel: If the gearbox feels “notchy” when cold (particularly 1st to 2nd), a fluid change often significantly improves the shift quality.

4. The “Bellcrank” Wear

The gear selector uses a cable-operated system with a bellcrank assembly on the side of the gearbox. Over time, the plastic bushings can wear, leading to a “sloppy” shifter feel or difficulty engaging 1st/Reverse. This is a common and relatively simple fix with a bushing refresh kit.
