Audi R8 420 4.2i v8 2006-2012 Rear Bumper
Part Number: 420.807.061 (Base Shell)
Application: Audi R8 4.2 FSI V8 Coupe & Spyder
Model Years: 2006–2012 (Pre-Facelift)
The rear bumper for the original V8 R8 is a complex, multi-piece assembly designed for extreme heat dissipation and aerodynamic efficiency. Unlike the V10 model, the V8 bumper is characterized by its four-slat air intake grilles (the V10 has two) and dual twin-exit exhaust finishers.
Component Architecture
A “complete” rear bumper assembly for the Type 42 V8 consists of several distinct modules:
-
Main Bumper Skin: Constructed from high-impact polypropylene.
-
Side Air Outlets: Feature four horizontal slats per side, essential for extracting hot air from the engine bay.
-
Rear Diffuser: The lower matte-black section that manages underbody airflow.
-
Exhaust Finishers: Integrated twin round pipes on each side (V10 models use large single ovals).
-
Parking Sensor Brackets: Four internal mounts for the PDC (Park Distance Control) sensors.
Technical Differences: V8 vs. V10
If you are sourcing or selling this part, it is critical to distinguish it from the V10 version, as they are often confused:
| Feature | V8 Bumper (2006-2012) | V10 Bumper (2009-2012) |
| Air Outlets | 4 Horizontal Slats | 2 Large Horizontal Slats |
| Exhaust Cutouts | Twin Dual-Round Tips | Single Large Oval Tips |
| Center Diffuser | Narrower Fins | More aggressive, wider Fins |
Installation & Maintenance Tips
-
Heat Shielding: The R8’s mid-engine layout makes the rear bumper area incredibly hot. Ensure the internal heat shields (Part No. 420.825.671) are transferred to the new bumper. Without them, the plastic will warp or bubble the paint within miles of driving.
-
PDC Harness: The wiring for the parking sensors is routed along the inner reinforcement bar. Be careful not to pinch this harness during fitment, as it will trigger a “Parking System Plus” error on the dashboard.
-
License Plate Lights: These are often LED or high-wattage halogen. Check that the clips are not brittle from engine heat before snapping them into the new bumper skin.
-
Fitment Alignment: The bumper meets the rear quarter panels at a very tight tolerance. Use the adjustable mounting brackets near the wheel arches to ensure a flush “factory” seam.
