BENTLEY CONTINENTAL GTC 18-24 3S 3SD Engine Control Module +Key
For the Third Generation Bentley Continental GTC (2018–2024), the Engine Control Module (ECM/ECU) and Key system are part of a highly secured “Component Protection” architecture. Replacing these components is no longer a simple “plug and play” procedure and requires specialized syncing with the vehicle’s immobilizer system.
1. Engine Control Module (ECM) Details
The 3S / 3SD chassis uses different ECMs depending on the engine. These units are often shared with Porsche (971 platform) and carry Audi/Bentley specific software.
| Engine Type | Primary Part Number (Series) | Manufacturer |
| 4.0L V8 Petrol | 971907553 (e.g., 971907553AN) |
Bosch |
| 6.0L W12 Petrol | 9719075XX (Varies by build) |
Bosch |
-
Location: The ECM is typically located in the plenum chamber (under the plastic scuttle at the base of the windshield).
-
Dual-ECU Note: On the W12 models, there are often two ECMs (Master and Slave). If you are replacing them due to a fault, it is critical to identify which one has failed or to replace both as a matched pair.
2. The “Key” and Immobilizer System
For the 3S generation, the key is part of the Advanced Keyless Entry system.
-
Key Part Number:
3SD837206(Base series) -
Frequency: 434 MHz (Standard for EU/UK) or 315 MHz (North America).
-
Replacement Requirement: A new key cannot be programmed to a car without an online connection to the Bentley “GeKo” server system in Crewe.
3. Why You Usually Need a “Kit” or Programming
If you buy a used Engine Control Module, the car will not start because of Component Protection (CP). Unlike older models where you could swap the “KESSY” module and key, the 3S chassis links the ECM, the Instrument Cluster, and the BCM (Body Control Module).
To make a replacement work, you have three options:
-
The Dealer Route: Buy a brand-new ECM and Key from a Bentley dealer. They will use the ODIS diagnostic system to perform an “Immobilizer Teach-in.”
-
The Cloning Route: If your old ECM is still readable, a specialist can “clone” its data onto a donor (used) ECM. This copies the VIN and security keys, making it plug-and-play.
-
The Full Kit: Purchasing a “Start Kit” which includes the ECM, BCM, Instrument Cluster, and matching Keys from a single donor car. This bypasses the need for initial programming but is extremely expensive and labor-intensive.
