Known for its smooth shifting and “Adaptive Transmission Control” (AGS), it remains a cornerstone of BMW’s late-90s engineering.

Technical Specifications

Key Applications

  • BMW E38 (7 Series): 735i, 740i, 740iL (1996–2001)

  • BMW E39 (5 Series): 535i, 540i (1996–2003)

  • Other Notable Uses: Range Rover HSE (L322 with the BMW M62 engine), Jaguar XJ8/XK8, and the Aston Martin DB7.

Critical Maintenance & Common Issues

While the 5HP24 is robust, it is susceptible to specific mechanical failures as the mileage climbs:

  1. Pressure Regulator Valve: The most common failure point. The valve in the main valve body wears down, leading to pressure spikes that can physically crack the “A” clutch drum.

  2. The “A” Clutch Drum: When the pressure regulator fails, the “A” drum (responsible for 1st–4th gears) often shears or cracks. This results in a loss of forward drive or severe “clunking” into gear.

  3. Torque Converter Lock-up: The seal inside the torque converter can wear, causing a “shudder” or “RPM hunting” while cruising at steady speeds between 40–60 mph.

  4. The “Lifetime Fluid” Myth: While BMW marketed the fluid as lifetime, ZF (the manufacturer) recommends changes every 50,000 to 75,000 miles to preserve the valve body and clutch packs.

Essential Components for a Refresh

If you are listing this for inventory or preparing for a rebuild, these are the high-demand parts:

  • Valve Body Rebuild Kit: Specifically including the upgraded oversized pressure regulator valve.

  • Heavy Duty “A” Drum: Reinforced aftermarket versions are preferred over OEM to prevent future shearing.

  • Filter & Gasket Kit: Ensure the filter is a Filtran brand (the original supplier) for correct flow rates.
