BMW M3 G80 front brake kit
For the BMW M3 (G80) and M4 (G82/G83), the front brake kit is available in two distinct factory configurations: the standard M Compound (iron) system and the ultra-high-performance M Carbon Ceramic system.
Choosing the right kit depends on whether you value daily usability and cost or absolute track endurance and weight reduction.
1. M Compound Front Brake Kit (Standard)
This is the factory-spec system for most M3/M4 models. It uses a “dual-cast” design where the iron friction ring is connected to an aluminum hub by stainless steel pins, allowing for better heat expansion.
-
Calipers: 6-piston fixed monoblock calipers, typically finished in High-Gloss Blue (Red and Black are available as no-cost options).
-
Rotors: 380mm x 36mm ventilated and cross-drilled discs
-
Brake Pads: High-friction semi-metallic pads (Part No. 34108093705).
-
Performance: Excellent “cold bite” for street driving, though they may produce more brake dust and exhibit fade under extreme, repeated track use.
2. M Carbon Ceramic Brake Kit (Upgrade)
Recognizable by its signature Gold Calipers, this kit is designed for the most demanding track conditions and offers a significant reduction in unsprung weight.
-
Calipers: 6-piston fixed monoblock calipers in an exclusive Gold finish.
-
Rotors: 400mm x 38mm carbon-fiber reinforced silicon carbide (C/SiC) discs.
-
Brake Pads: Specialized ceramic-specific compounds (Part No. 34108093715) designed to handle temperatures exceeding 1,000°C.
-
Key Advantage: Reduces total vehicle weight by approximately 13kg (28 lbs) and virtually eliminates brake fade, though they can be “squeaky” when cold or wet.
Package Components Checklist
A “Complete Front Kit” (whether OEM or Aftermarket) should include these essential parts for a full axle installation:
| Component | Technical Detail |
| Calipers (Left & Right) | 6-Piston forged aluminum units with mounting brackets. |
| Brake Discs | 2-piece floating design (380mm for Iron / 400mm for Ceramic). |
| Brake Pad Set | 4 pads total (2 per caliper) with anti-rattle clips. |
| Wear Sensor | A single electronic sensor (mounted on the front-left side). |
| Dust Shields | Enlarged backing plates to accommodate the larger rotors. |
| Brake Lines | Reinforced rubber or stainless steel braided lines. |
Technical Installation Note
The G8x platform uses an Integrated Brake System (IBC), which electronically manages pedal feel. Unlike older generations, you do not need to bleed the master cylinder manually for “feel,” but a specialized service function in BMW ISTA or a high-end scan tool is required to cycle the ABS valves during the bleeding process.
Pro Tip: If you are upgrading from 380mm Iron to 400mm Carbon Ceramic, ensure your wheels are at least 19 inches in diameter. Most 18-inch wheels will not clear the 400mm rotors and the larger gold calipers.
