Brake system Toyota Supra A90 Mk5/ BMW 240 G29

brake systems for the Toyota Supra MK5 (A90/A91), BMW Z4 (G29), and the BMW 2 Series (G42) share a common architecture, as they all utilize the BMW “G-chassis” performance braking components.

Because your work involves high-performance parts, understanding the interchangeability between these models is crucial, especially when sourcing Brembo components.

OEM Brake Specifications (3.0L / M40i Models)

The standard performance setup for the Supra 3.0 and Z4 M40i consists of fixed front calipers and sliding rear calipers with an integrated electronic parking brake (EPB).

Component Front Specification Rear Specification
Caliper Type 4-Piston Fixed (Brembo) Single-Piston Sliding (TRW/Continental)
Rotor Diameter 348 mm 345 mm
Rotor Thickness 36 mm (Vented) 24 mm (Vented)
Bolt Pattern 5 x 112 mm 5 x 112 mm
Center Bore 66.6 mm 66.6 mm
  • 2.0L Variation: Base models often use a smaller 330 mm front setup with single-piston calipers. If you are upgrading a 2.0L to 3.0L specs, you will need the larger calipers and matching 348 mm rotors.

Cross-Model Compatibility (G42 / G20 / G29)

The Supra’s braking hardware is nearly identical to the BMW M-Sport brakes found on the M240i (G42) and M340i (G20).

  • Pads & Rotors: Brake pads for the Supra MK5 are interchangeable with the BMW G42 2-series M-Sport pads.

  • The “Big” Upgrade: Many owners swap their 348 mm setup for the BMW M-Performance 374 mm or 395 mm kits (found on the X5 or M550i). These are “bolt-on” for the Supra/Z4 steering knuckle but require 19-inch wheels for clearance.

High-Performance & Big Brake Kits (BBK)

For track-focused builds (like a 700PS+ project), the factory 4-piston Brembos can suffer from heat soak. Common upgrades include:

  1. 6-Piston Brembo GT/GT-S: A popular “direct fit” kit using 380 mm x 34 mm 2-piece floating rotors.

  2. AP Racing Radi-CAL: Often used in professional racing (e.g., Garage Whifbitz kits) utilizing 382 mm rotors for maximum thermal capacity.

  3. Brake Ducting: The Supra A90 has “fake” vents in the front bumper that can be made functional with aftermarket ducting kits to channel air directly onto the 348 mm rotors.

Technical Service Notes

  • Electronic Parking Brake (EPB): To change the rear pads, you must use a diagnostic tool (like ISTA, Techstream, or BimmerLink) to “Retract Parking Brake” into Service Mode. Forcing the piston back manually will damage the internal electronic motor.

  • Bleeding Sequence: The ABS pump on these cars is a “smart” unit. It is highly recommended to use a pressure bleeder at 2.0 bar (approx. 29 psi) to ensure all air is removed from the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) module.

  • Torque Specs:

    • Front Caliper Mounting Bolts: 110 Nm (81 lb-ft).

    • Rear Caliper Bracket Bolts: 110 Nm (81 lb-ft).

    • Wheel Bolts: 140 Nm (103 lb-ft).
