Chrome grille for Ford Expedition, Ford F150 front panel

While the Ford F-150 and Ford Expedition share a chassis and many mechanical components, their front panels and grilles are not interchangeable for modern year groups (2015+). The Expedition typically features a taller, more integrated grille-to-hood transition compared to the F-150’s more segmented front-end design.

1. Ford Expedition Chrome Grilles (4th Gen: 2018–2021)

The 2018–2021 Expedition (U553) used several chrome styles based on the luxury trim level.

Part Number Description Common Application
JL1Z-8200-AD Chrome Style 1 (Twin-Bar) XLT, Limited Trims
JL1Z-8200-FC Premium Mesh/Satin Chrome Platinum Trim
JL1B-8200-FB5JP4 Limited Chrome Assembly High-spec Limited models
  • Design Note: These grilles are massive single-piece units. If the vehicle has the 360-degree camera, you must ensure the grille has the specific mounting hole and washer nozzle cutout located behind the Ford emblem.

  • Active Grille Shutters: The Expedition uses a dedicated shutter assembly (JL1Z-8475-A) behind the grille for aerodynamics. Ensure the mounting clips on a new chrome grille are perfectly aligned with this shutter frame.

2. Ford F-150 Chrome Grilles (13th Gen: 2018–2020)

As discussed earlier, the 2018–2020 F-150 refresh moved to a “two-bar” design.

  • Lariat Chrome (JL3Z-8200-B): Features two major chrome bars with a black or grey mesh background.

  • King Ranch (JL3Z-8200-C): Often features a “Chrome Mesh” or accent-colored (Caribou) insert.

  • Platinum (JL3Z-8200-BA): A distinct “Satin Chrome” finish with a honeycomb-style mesh.

3. Front Panel Differences & Interchangeability

If you are planning a front-end conversion or “swap,” keep these constraints in mind:

  • Headlight “Cuts”: The F-150 headlights have a “notched” inner edge where the grille bars slide in. The Expedition headlights have a flatter vertical interface. A grille from one will not physically sit flush with the headlights of the other.

  • Hood Profile: The leading edge of the Expedition hood is curved differently than the F-150. Using an F-150 grille on an Expedition (or vice versa) leaves a $50\text{mm}$ to $80\text{mm}$ gap between the grille top and the hood line.

  • Mounting Points: The upper radiator core support (the “header panel”) is different. The bolt holes for the F-150 grille do not align with the Expedition’s core support.

4. Technical Inventory Checklist

When sourcing these chrome units for a catalog or inventory:

  • Finish Type: Differentiate between “Bright Chrome” (mirror finish) and “Satin/Silk Chrome” (brushed appearance found on Platinum trims).

  • The “Lower” Grille: Both vehicles have a smaller, secondary chrome or black plastic “Lower Bumper Grille” (e.g., JL1Z-17K945-BB for Expedition). These are often sold separately from the main upper grille.

  • Emblem Size: For 2018+ models, the Expedition emblem is typically 9 inches, while the F-150 can vary between 9.5 and 7 inches depending on the specific grille style.
