Hood of an Aston Martin DB11 V8

The hood (bonnet) of the Aston Martin DB11 V8 is one of the most impressive pieces of automotive engineering on the car. Unlike the multi-piece hoods found on most vehicles, the DB11 features a massive “Clamshell” design.

Technical & Design Highlights

  • Material: Made from a single, large piece of aluminum. At the time of its release, it was one of the largest single-piece aluminum pressings in the automotive industry.

  • Opening Mechanism: It is front-hinged (opening forward). This is a nod to classic sports cars and provides excellent access to the 4.0L Twin-Turbo V8 engine.

  • V8-Specific Identification: * The V8 model features two functional heat extractors (vents).

    • Contrast: The V12 model features four vents. This is the quickest way to tell a V8 and V12 DB11 apart from the front.

  • Curlicue Aero: The hood integrates with the “Curlicue” vents behind the front wheel arches, which high-pressure air out of the wheel wells to reduce front-end lift.

Key Part Numbers & Variants

Because the DB11 is a hand-assembled GT, the hood is a “Body-in-White” component that requires precise alignment.

Component Part Number (Approx.) Notes
Main Hood Panel HY53-16C630-AA Supplied in primer (unpainted).
V8 Hood Vents (LH/RH) HY53-16C628-AC Available in Black Mesh, Dark, or Carbon Fiber.
Hood Latches AD43-16C826-AA Dual-latch system for high-speed stability.
Under-Bonnet Liner HY53-16N610-AB Sound and heat insulation specific to the V8.

Important Service Notes

  1. Alignment is Critical: Because it is a clamshell that meets the A-pillars, doors, and front bumper, aligning a DB11 hood is notoriously difficult. If the gaps are off by even 1-2mm, it can cause wind whistle or rubbing on the paint of the front wings (fenders).

  2. Soft Close: Late-model DB11s often feature a “soft-close” or refined latching mechanism. You should never “slam” an aluminum hood; instead, lower it gently and press down firmly over the latch points to avoid denting the soft aluminum.

  3. Pedestrian Protection: The hood is equipped with an Active Pyrotechnic System. In the event of a frontal collision with a pedestrian, small explosive charges fire to “pop” the rear of the hood up, creating a cushion between the hood and the hard engine components below.

Cost & Availability

  • New OEM: A replacement hood from Aston Martin typically costs between $8,000 and $12,000 (unpainted).

  • Used Market: Extremely rare to find in “perfect” condition because any front-end salvage usually involves hood damage.
