Jaguar E-Type Series III Removable Hardtop
Series III (V12) E-Type removable hardtop is a distinct evolution from the earlier 6-cylinder versions. Because the Series III Open Two Seater (OTS) was built on the longer wheelbase chassis (the same length as the old 2+2), the hardtop is physically larger and has a different profile than those for Series I or II cars.

1. Key Design Differences
The Series III hardtop is easily identifiable by its “stretched” appearance and specific trim:
-
Dimensions: It is significantly longer to accommodate the increased cockpit size of the V12 chassis.
-
Air Vents: Most Series III factory hardtops feature distinctive chrome-rimmed air extractor vents on the rear pillars (C-pillars) to improve cabin ventilation.
-
Rear Window: Uses a large, curved glass (or high-grade Perspex) window that provides a “wrap-around” view, much more expansive than the soft top’s small plastic window.
-
Internal Lining: Usually finished in a high-quality perforated “Ambla” or wool-cloth headliner, often in Grey or Biscuit.
2. Compatibility Warning
Critical Note: A Series I or II hardtop will not fit a Series III E-Type. The mounting points and the physical length of the door glass are different. Conversely, a Series III hardtop will only fit the V12 Roadster; it cannot be fitted to the 2+2 Coupe (which has a fixed roof).
3. Market Value & Rarity (2026)
Because many V12 E-Types were sold in the US (where the soft top stayed down most of the year), many original hardtops were separated from their cars decades ago and lost. This has driven prices up significantly.
| Condition | Estimated Price (USD) | Notes |
| Project / Core | $5,000 – $7,500 | Needs headliner, seals, and likely paint. |
| Restored / OEM | $12,000 – $18,000 | Complete with all chrome trim and latches. |
| New Reproduction | $4,500 – $6,000 | Fiberglass shells (e.g., Honeybourne Mouldings), usually without chrome. |
4. Hardware and Installation
To fit a hardtop to a V12 Roadster, you need the specific Series III Mounting Kit:
-
Chrome Finisher Strips: These sit on the rear deck to protect the paint from the hardtop’s rubber seal.
-
T-Bolts: Specialized mounting bolts that secure the rear of the top to the body.
-
Header Latches: Three standard over-center latches that clamp to the top of the windshield.
5. Storage Tip
If you own one, never store it leaning against a wall on its rear edge. The weight of the fiberglass can cause the “ears” (the front points that meet the windows) to splay outward over time, making it impossible to get a weather-tight seal later. Use a dedicated rolling hardtop stand and a breathable cover.
