McLaren 650s MP4 12C steering wheel carbon
McLaren MP4-12C or 650S is a popular upgrade, as many early models came with standard leather or Alcantara wheels. You have two main routes: sourcing a Genuine MSO (McLaren Special Operations) part or going with a custom carbon conversion.
1. Genuine MSO Carbon Fiber Steering Wheel
These are the factory-spec wheels found in high-option 650S models. They feature high-gloss carbon fiber on the top and bottom sections with leather or Alcantara grips on the sides.
-
Compatibility: The steering wheel frames for the 12C and 650S are identical and fully interchangeable.
-
Key Feature: Designed to house the standard McLaren airbag and the carbon fiber paddle shifters (which are often sold separately).
2. Custom Carbon Fiber Conversions
Many owners choose companies like MAcarbon or Vivid Racing to customize a factory core. This allows for more personalization.
-
Options: You can choose between Gloss, Matte, or 12K carbon weaves.
-
Add-ons: Many custom wheels include a 12 o’clock stripe (in McLaren Orange or Volcano Red) and contoured finger grips.
-
LED Shift Lights: Some aftermarket carbon wheels integrate an LED RPM display into the top rim.
Technical & Installation Notes
 Important Safety Warning:
-
Airbag Transfer: You will need to transfer your existing airbag module to the new wheel. Ensure the battery is disconnected for at least 30 minutes before starting to avoid accidental deployment.
-
Paddle Shifters: If your new wheel doesn’t come with them, you’ll need to swap your “rocker” paddle assembly. MSO extended carbon paddles are a highly recommended “while-you’re-in-there” upgrade.
-
Spline Alignment: Ensure the wheel is centered perfectly during installation to avoid steering angle sensor errors (which can trigger ESC/Traction Control lights).
