Mercedes-Benz 190SL Hardtop

The Mercedes-Benz 190SL (W121) hardtop is a distinct engineering piece that effectively turns the car into a “Coupe.” Unlike the aluminum tops of later SLs, this unit is made of pressed steel, giving it significant durability but also a heavy weight of approximately 50 lbs (23 kg).

1. Small Window vs. Large Window

The 190SL hardtop evolved mid-production, and identifying which version you have is crucial for both value and parts sourcing (like headliners and seals):

  • Early Style (1955–1959): Features a smaller, wrap-around rear window. These were often originally made of aluminum in the very first 1955 models before switching to steel. They are rarer and highly prized for their unique, hemispherical “bubble” look.

  • Late Style (1959–1963): Features a significantly larger rear window designed to improve driver visibility. This version is more common and is often considered more “elegant” by those who use their 190SL for touring.

2. Mounting Hardware & “The Brackets”

If you are buying a hardtop for a car that was originally a “Roadster-only” (soft-top only), you cannot simply drop it on. You must verify you have:

  • Rear Mounting Brackets: These chrome-plated “J-hooks” or turnbuckles ($130–$250 each) bolt to the rear deck to lock the top in place.

  • Side Tension Locks: These adjustable linkages ($280+) are often missing from “barn find” tops and are required to pull the top tight against the body.

  • Front Center Latch: A toggle-style latch ($290+) that secures the top to the header rail above the rearview mirror.

3. Restoration Complexity

  • The Seals: A complete rubber seal kit for a 190SL hardtop currently costs between $600 and $900. Replacing the rear window seal is particularly difficult and often requires two people to avoid cracking the curved glass.

  • Chrome Traps: The trim pieces are often chrome-plated brass. Because they are mated to a steel top, galvanic corrosion can lead to deep pitting that is extremely expensive to repair (re-chroming the trim alone can cost $2,000+).

  • Headliner: Original headliners were mohair or perforated MB-Tex. Replacements are available for roughly $250, but installation usually requires glass removal.
