Mercedes-Benz AMG GTS GTS GTR GTC Roadster LED Rear Spoiler
Active Aerodynamics | Integrated Third Brake Light | 2017–2023
On the AMG GT Roadster (R190)—including the base Roadster, GT S, and GT C variants—the rear spoiler serves a dual purpose. Unlike the Coupe’s fixed wing (on the GT R), the Roadster utilizes an electronically retractable spoiler that features the vehicle’s integrated LED Third Brake Light (High-Level Brake Lamp) along its trailing edge. 1. Functionality & Active Aerodynamics
The spoiler is controlled by the vehicle’s drive management system and reacts to speed and drive mode:
-
Automatic Deployment: In Comfort or Sport, the spoiler typically deploys at 120 km/h and retracts at 80 km/h.
-
Race Mode: In Sport+ or Race, it deploys earlier (at 70 km/h) and stays at a more aggressive angle to increase rear-axle downforce.
-
Manual Control: A dedicated button on the center console allows the driver to deploy the spoiler at a standstill for cleaning or aesthetics.
2. The Integrated LED Brake Light
The “LED” aspect of this component is a critical safety feature. Because the Roadster’s soft-top roof eliminates the traditional rear-window brake light location, Mercedes integrated a slim, high-intensity LED strip into the spoiler itself.
| Component | Detail |
| Light Type | High-intensity LED Strip |
| Connector | Multi-pin plug (carries power for both motor and LEDs) |
| Visual Style | Smoked/Darkened lens (Night Package) or Clear/Red lens |
3. Variations by Model
While the mechanical assembly is similar, the top cover (the “blade”) differs based on the trim package:
-
Standard: Painted in body color.
-
Night Package (Code P60): Finished in High-Gloss Black.
-
Carbon Fiber Package (Code 773): Finished in High-Gloss Carbon Fiber.
-
GT C Roadster: Often features a slightly different angle of attack logic to compensate for the wider rear track and increased power.
4. Common Technical Issues
-
“Spoiler Active” Error: If the LED strip fails or the motor encounters resistance, the dashboard will display a yellow or red warning limiting top speed.
-
Wiring Harness Fatigue: Because the spoiler moves up and down frequently, the internal wiring harness can eventually fray. If your brake light works only when the spoiler is “down,” the harness is likely damaged.
-
Drainage Clogging: The spoiler “bucket” (the cavity it sits in) has drain holes. If these clog with leaves or dirt, water can pool and damage the electric motor.
