NISMO LMGT4 18×10″ Forged-Magnesium Wheels

NISMO LMGT4 Forged-Magnesium wheel is one of the rarest and most legendary components in the JDM world. While the standard LMGT4 (Forged Aluminum) is a staple for Skyline GT-R owners, the “Forged Mag” version was a hyper-limited racing-derived part that is now considered a blue-chip automotive investment.

1. Technical Specifications

Unlike the aluminum versions produced in large batches, the Magnesium LMGT4 was designed for maximum unsprung weight reduction.

  • Construction: One-piece Forged Magnesium Monoblock (Produced by RAYS Engineering).

  • Dimensions: $18\times10″$ is the definitive spec for the R33 and R34 GT-R.

  • Offset: Typically +20mm (A perfect “square” fitment for GT-R chassis).

  • Weight: Approximately 15.5 lbs (7.0 kg) per wheel. For comparison, the forged aluminum version in the same size weighs roughly 21 lbs (9.5 kg).

  • Load Rating: 690 kg (specifically stamped on the hub).

2. Identifying Authentic “Forged Mag” Units

Because of their high value, many people refinish standard aluminum LMGT4s to look like the Magnesium version. To verify a genuine set:

  • The “Forged Mag” Decal: Authentic wheels feature a specific blue, red, and black “NISMO” logo alongside the text “FORGED MAG” on one spoke.

  • Stamping: The inner barrel will have “MAG” or “Magnesium” stamped into the casting, along with the RAYS Engineering markings.

  • Valve Stems: The original magnesium wheels used a specific lightweight valve stem that is distinct from the standard RAYS versions.

  • Texture: Magnesium has a slightly different surface grain under paint compared to aluminum, often appearing more “porous” if the finish has aged.

3. Pros and Cons of Magnesium

Feature Benefit / Drawback
Weight 30% lighter than forged aluminum; dramatically improves turn-in and braking.
Damping Magnesium has 50x the vibration-dampening capability of aluminum, offering a smoother ride on rough tracks.
Durability While extremely strong, magnesium is more brittle than aluminum. It does not “bend”—it cracks under extreme impact.
Corrosion Magnesium is highly susceptible to oxidation. If the paint is chipped, the metal can “chalk” and degrade rapidly unless resealed.
