BMW M2, M3, and M4, “MKR” (often associated with MKR-Carbon or specialized custom shops) refers to bespoke, handcrafted steering wheels that blend OEM cores with high-end materials like Dry Carbon Fiber, Alcantara, and integrated LED technology.

Unlike a mass-produced “M Performance” wheel, an MKR-style wheel is typically built-to-order, allowing you to specify every detail from the stitching color to the LED shift-light thresholds.

For MKR wheels with the LED screen, the system usually consists of two parts:

1. The Internal Loom: Pre-installed inside the wheel to power the screen and LEDs.

2. The Wireless OBD2 Module: A small dongle that plugs into your car’s OBD port. It transmits data (RPM, Temp, Speed) via Bluetooth or a 2.4GHz signal directly to the steering wheel display.

If your M3 or M4 is equipped with Driving Assistant Professional (the semi-autonomous mode that allows hands-free driving on highways), you must be careful:

• HOD Sensor: The factory steering wheel has a capacitive “Hands-Off Detection” sensor. Most custom carbon wheels (including MKR and others) do not include this sensor.

• Consequence: If you install a custom wheel without HOD support, your “Hands-free” driving assistance will no longer function, and you may get a “System Malfunction” error unless it is coded out.
