Toyota GT86 steering wheel

Toyota GT86 (ZN6) features a purpose-built, small-diameter steering wheel—one of the smallest ever fitted to a production Toyota. While the steering wheel is physically interchangeable between all 2012–2021 models, there are significant differences in aesthetics and features between the “Zenki” (early) and “Kouki” (late) models.

1. OEM Generation Differences

2. Genuine Part Numbers

  • Early Model (2012–2016): SU003-05652 or SU003-05653.

  • Late Model (2017–2021): SU003-07106.

  • TRD Edition: Often features red leather accents at the 12 o’clock and 6 o’clock positions.

3. Aftermarket Upgrade Options

Because the GT86 is a driver-focused platform, the aftermarket for steering wheels is extensive. Most upgrades are “frame-only,” meaning you swap your original airbag and buttons into the new wheel.

  • Carbon Fiber Conversions: Available in “Flat Bottom” (D-shape) designs. Many now feature integrated LED Shift Lights that plug into the OBD2 port.

  • GReddy / TOM’S Racing: These brands offer high-quality “Direct Replacement” wheels. The TOM’S Carbon Wheel (TMS-45100-TZN65), for example, reduces the diameter further to 355mm for even sharper steering response.

  • Alcantara Wraps: Popular for track use to provide better grip with racing gloves, though they require more maintenance to prevent “matting” from skin oils.

4. Technical Installation Notes

  • The “Clock Spring”: If you are retrofitting a 2017+ steering wheel with buttons into a 2012–2016 car, it is not a direct plug-and-play for the buttons. You will typically need the newer clock spring and potentially a custom harness to get the audio controls working.

  • Airbag Warning: When removing the steering wheel, always disconnect the battery for at least 10 minutes prior. If installing an aftermarket “deep dish” racing wheel (like Sparco or Momo) that deletes the airbag, a 2.2-ohm resistor is required to keep the SRS light off.

  • Alignment: The GT86 steering rack is highly sensitive. When re-installing, ensure the wheel is perfectly centered on the splines to avoid your Traction Control/VSC system throwing an error due to a misaligned Steering Angle Sensor.
