Toyota GT86 / Subaru BRZ drive shafts
Toyota GT86 and Subaru BRZ, the drivetrain utilizes a two-piece propeller shaft (drive shaft) connecting the transmission to the differential, and two rear axle shafts (half-shafts) delivering power to the wheels.
1. Propeller Shaft (Center Drive Shaft)
The OEM unit is a two-piece steel design featuring a center support bearing. It is robust for stock power but is a common source of drivetrain “slop” due to the rubber carrier.
-
OEM Part Numbers: * Manual (6MT):
SU003-00657-
Automatic (6AT):
SU003-00658(Note: The AT shaft is a different length than the MT version).

-
Common Upgrade: A 1-piece Aluminum or Carbon Fiber shaft (e.g., from The Driveshaft Shop) is a popular mod. It reduces rotational mass by roughly 5 kg (11 lbs) and eliminates the center bearing, providing much sharper throttle response.
-
Carrier Upgrade: If keeping the OEM shaft, upgrading to a stiffer carrier bushing (like JXB Performance) reduces movement during hard launches and shifts.
2. Rear Axle Shafts (Half-Shafts)
These are the shafts that connect the differential to the rear hubs.
-
The “Clicking” Issue: A known issue on lowered GT86/BRZ models is a clicking or popping noise from the rear. This is often caused by the axle nuts or the CV joints operating at extreme angles.
-
The Fix: Retorquing the axle nut to the updated spec or applying a thin layer of specialized grease to the hub face often solves the “axle click.”
-
High-HP Builds: For forced induction builds over 300 WHP, the factory axles can become a failure point. Upgraded axles (rated for 600–800 HP) use high-strength 300M steel bars to prevent snapping during launches.
3. Critical Torque Specifications
When performing maintenance or swapping shafts, use these specific values to ensure safety and prevent vibrations.
Pro Tip: It is highly recommended to use Blue Loctite on the four bolts connecting the driveshaft to the differential flange, as these are high-vibration areas.
4. Identification & Differences
-
2012–2021 (Gen 1) vs. 2022+ (Gen 2): While the chassis is similar, the 2022+ GR86/BRZ received reinforced mounting points. The propeller shafts are generally interchangeable between generations if the transmission type (Manual vs. Auto) matches, but always verify length for your specific year.
