Toyota Supra MK5 A90 rear bumper

Toyota Supra MK5 (A90/A91) rear bumper is a highly aerodynamic, multi-piece assembly that integrates several functional and aesthetic components. Because the A90 shares its architecture with the BMW G29 Z4, the mounting and sensor integration are more complex than on previous generations.

Components & Composition

The “rear bumper” is actually a collection of several distinct parts that are often sold separately:

  • Main Bumper Cover: The large painted plastic (PP) shell.

  • Lower Diffuser: The unpainted black or carbon-look lower section that houses the exhaust outlets.

  • Center Brake Light: An F1-style rectangular LED tucked into the center of the diffuser.

  • Reflectors: Two slim red reflectors integrated into the outer edges.

  • Tow Hook Cover: A small removable square on the passenger side for the recovery eye.

Technical Specifications

Feature Detail
Material Polypropylene (PP) / Thermoplastic
PDC Sensors 4 to 6 Park Distance Control (PDC) sensors (depending on trim/package)
Exhaust Outlets Designed for dual 4″ to 5″ tips
OEM Part Number 52159-WAA01 (Main Cover – Primed)
Diffuser Part Number 52402-WAA01

Common Variations & Editions

  • Standard (3.0/2.0): Features a matte black or textured grey lower diffuser.

  • A91-CF Edition: Includes a factory carbon fiber lower diffuser and specialized aero “canards” or spats on the sides.

  • Special Edition Paints: If you are ordering a pre-painted replacement, note that colors like A91 Stratosphere Blue or Refraction Blue may have specific paint-code matches that are difficult to blend with older panels.

Installation & Replacement Notes

  1. Bumper Removal: To remove the rear bumper, you must first remove the taillights and several fasteners inside the rear wheel wells. There are also hidden clips along the “fender-to-bumper” seam that are prone to snapping if pulled too aggressively.

  2. Blind Spot Monitors (BSM): The BSM radar sensors are mounted to the body behind the bumper corners. If you have been in a rear-end collision, these sensors often need recalibration even if they aren’t physically cracked.

  3. Active Exhaust: Ensure the exhaust tips are correctly centered during reassembly; the MK5’s active exhaust valves can vibrate against the diffuser if the alignment is off by even a few millimeters.

Popular Aftermarket Upgrades

Many owners replace the OEM rear bumper components to change the car’s profile:

  • Adro / Sayber Designs: Popular for more aggressive “swan neck” wing compatible diffusers.

  • Heritage Edition Style: A popular conversion that adds a more rounded, MK4-style look to the rear of the A90.

  • Exhaust Bezel Upgrades: Replacing the plastic exhaust surrounds with carbon fiber versions.
