Toyota Supra MK5 BMW Z4 M40i B58 MPS Upgrade Turbocharger 600PS
Toyota Supra MK5 (A90) and BMW Z4 M40i (G29), the MPS 600PS upgrade is often considered the “perfect” street turbo. While the 700PS variants require significant fueling overhauls, the 600PS (approx. 592 HP) target is achievable with a high-flow hybrid turbo while maintaining near-stock reliability and lightning-fast spool.
In Europe, MPS Engineering is a premier tuner for this platform, and their 600PS kit typically centers around a Stage 1+ or Stage 2 hybrid unit.
Technical Specifications: MPS 600 Hybrid
The MPS 600 is a “Bolt-On” upgrade, meaning it utilizes the original BorgWarner twin-scroll housing but replaces the internal rotating assembly.
-
Compressor Wheel: Enlarged 6+6 or 7+7 billet aluminum wheel for increased mass airflow.
-
Turbine Wheel: High-flow 9-blade turbine to reduce backpressure, allowing the engine to breathe better at high RPM (where the stock turbo usually tapers off).
-
Bearings: Upgraded 360-degree thrust bearings to withstand the higher boost pressures (typically 24–27 psi) required for this power level.
-
Response: Because the housing remains compact, the “lag” is virtually non-existent, hitting full boost only 200–300 RPM later than the stock unit.
Supporting Modifications for 600PS
To hit a reliable 600PS on the B58 engine, you need to clear the “bottlenecks” in the intake and exhaust paths:
| Category | Requirement | Why? |
| Downpipe | High-Flow (200-cell) or Catless | Essential to reduce EGTs (Exhaust Gas Temps) and backpressure. |
| Fueling | TU / Supra HPFP | The stock Gen 1 B58 pump (found in early Z4s) caps at ~450hp. The Supra/TU pump is required for 600PS. |
| Intake | 3.5″ or 4″ Silicone Inlet | The stock plastic inlet pipe is a major restriction for upgraded turbos. |
| Transmission | xHP Stage 3 Flash | Increases line pressure in the ZF8HP to prevent clutch slip at 700Nm+ torque. |
