BENTLEY CONTINENTAL GT 6.0 2012 W12 Engine Control Unit+Wrench

For a 2012 Bentley Continental GT W12, the Engine Control Unit (ECU) system is complex because the 6.0L W12 engine actually uses two ECUs (Master and Slave) to manage its 12 cylinders.

If you are seeing a Wrench/Spanner symbol on your dashboard, it typically indicates a service requirement or an immobilizer/pairing fault rather than a physical tool you need.

1. ECU Part Numbers (2012 W12)

The 2012 model sits at the transition between the first generation (3W) and the second generation. The ECUs are Bosch ME7.1.1 units.

  • Main Part Number: 07C906018

  • Specific 2012 Revisions: * 07C906018LD (Common for 2012–2013 GT/GTC)

    • 07C906018LC (Found in specific Speed or high-output variants)

  • Note: You must match the letter suffix (LD, LC, DD, etc.) exactly. A mismatch will cause the car to not start or trigger permanent “Checksum Error” faults.

2. The “Wrench” Symbol & Immobilizer

If you have replaced an ECU and now see a Wrench or Key/Lock symbol:

  • Immobilizer Lock: Bentley ECUs are “VIN-locked.” If you install a used ECU without “cloning” your original data or performing an “Immo-OFF” service, the car will start for 2 seconds and then die.

  • Wrench Symbol: In the 2012 Bentley, this is often the Service Indicator. However, if it appeared immediately after ECU work, it likely means the ECU and the Instrument Cluster are not communicating (Component Protection).

  • The Solution: You cannot simply swap these. You must either:

    1. Clone the ECU: Send your old (broken) ECU and the “new” used ECU to a specialist to transfer the security data.

    2. Dealer Pairing: Use Bentley ODIS software to perform “Online Component Protection” removal (requires a live connection to Bentley servers in Crewe).

3. Location of the ECUs

If you need to remove them for repair or cloning:

  • Position: They are located in the plenum chamber (the area under the plastic scuttle panel at the base of the windshield).

  • Access: You must remove the windshield wiper arms and the plastic cowl cover.

  • Security: They are often held in by “Security Shear Bolts” (headless bolts). You will need a small chisel or a “Security Bolt Extractor” to remove the bracket—this may be the “wrench” or tool you are looking for.
