18×9.5″ and 18×10.5″ BBS RE Forged Magnesium Wheels for BMW
BBS RE Forged Magnesium (often specifically referenced by part numbers RE704 and RE705) is one of the most exotic wheel sets ever produced for the BMW platform. Originally commissioned by TC Kline Racing and later utilized by the BMW PTG (Prototype Technology Group) factory race team, these wheels were designed for the E46 M3 GTR and GT class racing programs.

1. Technical Specifications
Unlike the standard aluminum BBS RE wheels, the magnesium version is a “monoblock” (one-piece) forged wheel that prioritizes extreme weight reduction and heat dissipation.
-
Front (RE704): $18\times9.5″$ ET38
-
Rear (RE705): $18\times10.5″$ ET28
-
Weight: Approximately 14–15 lbs per wheel (compared to ~22 lbs for a similar forged aluminum wheel).
-
Bolt Pattern: $5\times120$ mm
-
Center Bore: $72.56$ mm
2. The Magnesium Factor: Pros & Cons
Magnesium is the “super-material” of the racing world, but it requires specific care that aluminum does not.
| Feature | Forged Magnesium (RE) | Forged Aluminum (Standard) |
| Weight | ~40% Lighter | Standard Performance |
| Vibration | 50x better dampening | Standard |
| Durability | “Grainy” structure; can shatter on heavy impact | Bends before it breaks |
| Repair | Cannot be straightened if bent | Easily repaired |
| Corrosion | Requires specialized coatings to prevent oxidation | Very resistant |
3. Fitment Guide
These were specifically engineered for the E46 M3 chassis:
-
E46 M3: This is the “native” fitment. The ET38 front and ET28 rear are perfect for a track-focused stance. Most owners run a 265/35R18 front and 285/30R18 rear tire setup.
-
E9X M3: These will fit, but the offsets are slightly “tucked” compared to E90/E92 specific wheels. You would likely want a 12–15 mm spacer in the front to bring them flush with the wider E92 fenders.
-
Z3 M Coupe/Roadster: The rear ET28 is a fantastic fit for the “Clownshoe,” though the front might require a small spacer depending on your suspension setup.
