2. Platform-Specific Fitment

Skyline clutches are not “one size fits all.” You must identify the Pull-Type vs. Push-Type mechanism to ensure the correct part is supplied.

  • R32 GT-R (Early): Uses a Push-Type clutch.

  • R32 GT-R (Late) & R33 GT-R: Uses a Pull-Type clutch.

  • R34 GT-R: Exclusively Pull-Type. The R34 also uses a unique Getrag 6-speed input shaft, requiring a specific spline count.

  • GTT / GTST (R33/R34): These generally use Push-Type systems. Note that the R34 GTT uses a larger diameter disc than the R33 GTST, even though the bolt patterns are similar.

4. Quality Control & Inspection

  • Spline Wear: On used multi-plate kits, inspect the center hub splines. If they are “pointed” or thin, the hub will eventually strip, leaving the driver stranded.

  • Heat Checking: Look for blue/purple “hot spots” on the pressure plate and flywheel surfaces. If these are deep, the surface must be professionally ground (machined) before the clutch will bite correctly.

  • Disc Thickness: Measure the friction material. Exedy provides a “minimum service thickness” in their catalogs. If a disc is within $1$mm of the rivets, it is considered “at the end of its life.”
