1. Key Part Numbers & Identification

For a “complete” unit (including the housing, HID ballast, and bulb), you are likely looking for the following:

  • Lens & Body Assembly (Left): SU003-02517 (Commonly referred to as the housing).

  • Subaru Equivalent: 84001CA031 (Often cheaper as a direct crossover part).

  • The “Complete” Distinction: A standard “Lens & Body” from Toyota usually does not include the expensive electronics. To be truly complete, it must include:

    • HID Ballast (Control Unit): SU003-02558 (Mounted to the bottom of the housing).

    • HID Bulb: 90981-20024 (Type D4S).

2. Technical Specifications

  • Lighting Tech: Bi-Xenon (Single projector handles both Low and High beam via a moving internal shutter).

  • DRL: Integrated “J-Hook” or “Checkmark” LED strip.

  • Connector: 8-pin main connector (for Xenon models). Note: If you are swapping this into a base model that had Halogen lights, you will need a 6-to-8 pin conversion harness.

  • Leveling: Features an internal electric motor for automatic vertical leveling (standard on GTS trims).

3. Facelift (2017+) vs. Pre-Facelift (2012–2016)

If you are sourcing this for a repair or an upgrade, ensure you don’t accidentally buy the 2017+ LED version:

  • 2012–2016 (Xenon): Uses a replaceable D4S bulb and an external ballast. The DRL is a simpler LED strip.

  • 2017–2021 (LED): The LEDs are integrated into the housing and are not serviceable separately. The DRL is more complex, and the housing has “86” embossed inside the lens.

4. Common Issue: Condensation

Like the taillights, the early GT86 Xenon headlights are prone to internal fogging/condensation.

  • Check: Before installing a used unit, inspect the rear breather caps and the seal around the ballast on the bottom. If the ballast has been submerged in moisture, it will eventually fail, causing the bulb to flicker or not ignite.
