The Audi R8 Spyder (4S) uses a specialized rear lid that functions as both a trunk cover and an engine ventilation hatch. For the 2020 LCI (facelift), the design was updated with broader ventilation grilles and refined aero lines. When equipped with the Carbon Package, the lid features integrated high-gloss carbon fiber trim and side vents that distinguish the “Performance” models from the base Spyder.

Technical Specifications

  • Chassis Compatibility: Audi R8 4S Spyder (Convertible) only. Note: This will not fit the Coupe due to the different roofline and rear glass integration.

  • Material: Multi-material construction (Aluminum shell with carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) inserts).

  • Carbon Finish: 2×2 Twill weave, UV-resistant high-gloss lacquer (standard OEM finish).

  • Included Tech: * Pneumatic Struts: Heavy-duty cylinders to manage the lid’s weight.

    • Integrated Grilles: Honeycomb mesh inserts for heat extraction.

    • Locking Mechanism: Electromechanical soft-close latch.

Key Facelift (LCI) Differences

  • Ventilation Geometry: The facelifted lid features a wider, more aggressive grille layout compared to the 2016–2018 models to improve cooling for the uprated $620\text{ PS}$ V10 engine.

  • Carbon Trim Inlays: The carbon fiber sections are more prominent, often extending to the surround of the rear-view camera and the edges of the air intake vents.

  • Weight Reduction: The carbon-trim variant is approximately 15% lighter than the standard composite version, aiding the Spyder’s center of gravity.

Professional Installation & Cataloging Notes

  1. Hinge Alignment: The Spyder’s rear lid is notoriously difficult to align. It must clear the folding convertible top mechanism with millimetric precision. Improper alignment can lead to the soft top catching on the lid during its cycle, causing thousands in damage.

  2. Carbon Fiber Integrity: When sourcing used carbon lids, check the “resin bond” where the carbon meets the metal shell. Heat cycles from the V10 engine can occasionally cause delamination or “yellowing” of the clear coat on early or poorly maintained units.

  3. Sensor Transfer: Ensure the Latch Position Sensor is transferred. If the car does not detect the lid is fully closed, it will disable the convertible top operation as a safety precaution.

  4. Paint Matching: If the main shell is painted (e.g., Mythos Black or Ara Blue), remember that Audi’s factory paint depth on the R8 is higher than standard models. A respray may require extra clear coats to match the depth of the carbon fiber’s gloss.

Inventory Note: If selling a “Complete” lid, clarify if the 3rd Brake Light and Reverse Camera are included, as these are high-value sub-components often sold separately.
