BMW 4 Series LCI (Life Cycle Impulse) facelift—which covers the F32 (Coupe), F33 (Convertible), F36 (Gran Coupe), and the F80 (M3/M4) models from roughly 2017 to 2020—introduced the iconic “hexagonal” light design.

In the European market, these Adaptive LED Headlights (Option Code S552A) are highly sought after for both their aesthetics and their advanced functionality, which is often more unrestricted than the North American versions.

1. Visual Design: The “Icon” Look

The LCI Adaptive LEDs are easily distinguished from the pre-facelift versions and the standard LED units:

• Hexagonal Halo Rings: Unlike the older circular “Angel Eyes,” these feature a flattened, aggressive hexagonal shape.

• The “Icon” DRL: The daytime running lights extend from the center toward the outer edges, creating a wider, more modern stance.

• Full LED Housing: Both the high and low beams are housed in sophisticated projector modules with “BMW Adaptive LED” etched into the side of the housing.

2. Functional Features (EU-Spec)

The European version of the S552A system is significantly more capable than the US version due to differing regulations regarding beam patterns:

• BMW Selective Beam: This is the “Anti-Dazzle” high beam. It allows you to keep your high beams on constantly. When the camera detects an oncoming car, the headlights mechanically “tunnel” the light around that car, keeping the rest of the road fully illuminated.

   

• Variable Light Distribution: The beam pattern changes based on your speed and environment:

  • City Light: A wider, shorter beam to see pedestrians at low speeds.

  • Motorway Light: A narrower, longer-range beam for high-speed driving.

     

• Cornering Lights: Dedicated LEDs that illuminate the side of the road when the steering wheel is turned or the indicator is active (at speeds below 40 km/h).

3. Part Numbers & Identification

For sourcing or business inventory, the EU-spec units are marked with the E1 (Germany) or similar E-mark, which is a requirement for EU road legality.
