BMW F15 F16 X5 X6 X5M F85 X6M F86 Speedometer Head Up KMH German TOP
6WB Full Digital Cluster | HUD Support | KM/H German Spec
For the X5 (F15), X6 (F16), and the full-M variants X5M (F85) and X6M (F86), the ultimate dashboard upgrade is the 6WB Full Digital Instrument Cluster. Sourcing a “German Spec” (KM/H) unit is ideal for European/International builds or for owners looking for the clean, metric-only “Top” aesthetic found in high-end German-delivery vehicles. Component Overview: 6WB vs. M-Cluster
| Feature | Standard 6WB (F15/F16) | M-Specific Cluster (F85/F86) |
| Display Type | 10.25″ High-Res LCD (Full Digital) | Analog Dials with Digital Lower Section (6WA) |
| Driving Modes | Comfort (Red/White), Sport (Red), Eco Pro (Blue) | M-View (Specific RPM/Shift Light graphics) |
| HUD Support | Most 6WB units have a specific port for HUD | Standard on M5/M6; specific to VIN options |
| Speed Scale | Digital (switches between KM/H and MPH) | Physical 330 KM/H scale with M-Logo |
| Needles | Digital Rendering | Physical Red Needles (High Contrast) |
Technical Intelligence: The “HUD” Requirement
If your X5/X6 is equipped with a Head-Up Display (HUD), you must ensure the cluster has the dedicated HUD output port.
-
Standard 6WB HUD Port: Look for part numbers like 62108781321 or 62109442850.
-
Non-HUD Units: These lack the internal video processing chip for the windshield projection. If you install a non-HUD cluster into a HUD-equipped car, your windshield display will remain blank.
-
German Spec (KM/H): While digital 6WB clusters can toggle between units in the iDrive menu, a unit sourced from the German market will default to Celsius and KM/H and typically features the European “E-Mark” certification on the housing.
F85 X5M / F86 X6M Specifics
Critical Note for M-Car Owners:
Genuine M5/M6 (F85/F86) clusters are not fully digital (6WB) from the factory; they use the 6WA (Extended Display) with physical dials and a 330 KM/H scale.
The “M” Retrofit: If you put a 6WB digital cluster into an X5M, you will lose the M-specific “Shift Lights” and the “M-View” HUD graphics unless you use custom aftermarket coding/firmware to mimic the M-design.
Oil Temp vs. MPG: Standard F15 6WB units show a “Fuel Economy” (MPG/Liters) gauge. True F85/F86 M clusters display Oil Temperature in that location—vital for S63 V8 engine health.
Retrofit & Coding (The “Virginizing” Process)
To install a used 6WB/Speedometer into your car, the unit must be virginized:
-
EEPROM Reset: The mileage and VIN from the donor car must be wiped from the cluster’s internal chip. If not wiped, your car will show a “Red Tamper Dot” next to the mileage.
-
VIN Injection: Your car’s VIN must be written into the cluster.
-
VO Coding: The car’s Vehicle Order must be updated (adding option code 6WB) using E-Sys so the iDrive can communicate with the new digital interface.
