CARBON FIBER FRONT LIP FOR MCLAREN 720S R-1 and it clean
The R-1 Style Carbon Fiber Front Lip for the McLaren 720S is one of the most aggressive aerodynamic upgrades available for the Super Series chassis. When you specify an “R-1” style, it typically refers to a design inspired by the 720S GT3 or Senna-esque racing lines, featuring more pronounced outboard winglets and a deeper forward extension than the factory MSO (McLaren Special Operations) lip.
To ensure the piece is “clean” (high-quality finish and fitment), here are the technical benchmarks you should look for or highlight.
Technical Specifications
| Feature | Requirement for “Clean” Quality |
| Material | 100% Pre-preg (Dry) Carbon Fiber |
| Weave Pattern | 2×2 Twill (Matches OEM McLaren Carbon) |
| Finish | High-Gloss UV-Resistant Clear Coat |
| Construction | Vacuum Infused / Autoclaved |
| Installation | Uses OEM Mounting Points (No drilling preferred) |
What Makes an R-1 Lip “Clean”?
When sourcing or inspecting a high-end carbon component for a 720S, the “cleanliness” of the part is determined by three factors:
-
Weave Symmetry: On an R-1 lip, the carbon weave should meet at a perfect “V” in the center (book-matched). If the weave is wavy or slanted, it will look “dirty” once installed on a car of this caliber.
-
Edge Finishing: The underside edges should be smooth and finished. Poor quality lips often have “raw” fiberglass or rough carbon edges underneath that can trap road debris and lead to delamination.
-
Fitment Gap: A clean lip should sit flush against the 720S front bumper with zero “daylight” between the carbon and the paint. The R-1 style usually wraps slightly into the side air intakes; these transitions must be razor-sharp.
Installation & Protection Tips
Given that the 720S has a very low approach angle, even with the vehicle lift system, a “clean” lip won’t stay that way without protection:
-
Scrape Guards: It is highly recommended to install Sliplo or similar polyurethane scrape guards on the underside of the lip.
-
PPF (Paint Protection Film): Before installation, the lip should be wrapped in 8-10 mil PPF. Carbon fiber is prone to “star cracks” from rock chips, which are nearly impossible to repair.
-
Hardware: Ensure you use stainless steel or titanium hardware. Using standard steel bolts will eventually lead to rust streaks on your clean carbon.
