PORSCHE 996 3.4 Engine Control Unit + Key

Porsche 996.1 (3.4L) Engine Control Unit (DME) along with a key, you are dealing with a matched “security set.” Because the 996.1 uses the Bosch Motronic 5.2.2 (for 1998–1999) or 7.2 (for 2000–2001) system, the components are digitally tethered.

To successfully swap this into a vehicle without expensive dealer programming, you typically need the “Trinity” of parts from the donor car.

The Required Matched Set

If you are looking for a “plug-and-play” solution, ensure the set includes these three items:

  1. DME (Engine Control Unit): The main Bosch silver box.

  2. Alarm/Immobilizer Module: The black box located under the driver’s seat (as discussed with part 996.618.604.00).

  3. Key Transponder: The small pill-shaped chip inside the plastic key head.

Note: If you only have the ECU and the Key, the car will not start. The Alarm Module acts as the gatekeeper between the two.

Compatibility by Year

The 3.4L engine had two distinct electronic phases. You must match the DME to the car’s cable type:

Model Year DME Version Throttle Type Bosch Part Number (Approx)
1998 – 1999 Motronic 5.2.2 Cable Actuated 0 261 204 605
2000 – 2001 Motronic 7.2 E-Gas (Drive-by-wire) 0 261 204 790

Critical Identification Details

  • Tiptronic vs. Manual: DMEs are programmed differently for transmission types. A manual DME can sometimes be recoded for a Tiptronic using a PIWIS tool, but it is easier to match the donor transmission.

  • The Transponder “Pill”: When buying a “Key,” ensure the internal ID44 transponder chip is included. If the key blade is cut differently, you can swap the pill into your existing key head.

Inventory & Shipping Tips

If you are preparing this for a customer or listing it for sale:

  • Verify the Pins: Inspect the DME header pins for any signs of green corrosion or bending, which is common in units sourced from damp environments.

  • The “Limp Mode” Risk: If a DME and Alarm module are mismatched, the car may start for 2 seconds and then die, or it may not crank at all.

  • Safe Packaging: These Bosch units are sensitive to static and physical shock. Use anti-static bags and significant padding for transit, especially for the delicate Alarm Module.
